My name is Craig Houston or ‘Bear’ and I established Bear in Mind with the aim of ‘Making a Difference’ to the Mental Health and Wellbeing culture in our communities. I am committed to tackling the stigma around Mental Health, as I believe, it prevents so many from getting the help they deserve! I am passionate about supporting others to live to their full potential, with the necessary tools needed to navigate the inevitable setbacks life will conjure up.

My desire is to see Mental Health recognised and prioritised, in the same vein, as physical health! Together we can make this a reality…

First Aid for Mental Health

Everyone has Mental Health in the same way that everyone has physical health. Mental Health impacts all of us to some extent and if it is not given the appropriate care, can detract from our overall wellbeing. It is reported that 1 in 4 people in the United Kingdom will experience a Mental Health problem each year and as many as 1 in 6 people reporting a common Mental Health problem (anxiety, depression, etc) each week. First Aid for Mental Health will enable learners to recognise the signs and symptoms of many mental Health conditions, reduce stigma and provide crucial support to any individual in need.

Suicide First Aid

Imagine the ability to tip the balance and change a life forever. Every year close to 800,000 people take their own life and there are many more people who attempt suicide. Every suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities and entire countries and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind. Suicide occurs throughout the lifespan and was the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds globally in 2016. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises suicide as a public health priority. Suicide First Aid provides learners with the tools to be able to provide life-saving interventions.

Safeguarding

What is Safeguarding? It’s how we can protect children, young people and vulnerable adults from abuse, neglect or other detrimental actions of another individual or individuals. Everyone has the right of protection from these actions and by teaching how to recognise the signs of abuse and neglect we can prevent the needless suffering and harm brought to bear on the most vulnerable in our society.

Wellbeing Coaching

One-to-one coaching empowers you to imagine, implement and achieve your vision. Often, we are waiting for our needs and goals to find us but it doesn't just happen! We have to make an investment in ourselves and consciously create the reality you desire. Wellbeing coaching will champion and support you on your journey. Our time together will be spent removing the barriers that are holding you back in life and working towards the fulfilment and happiness you deserve!

Craig provided Awareness of Mental Health First Aid in advance of our spa re-opening after lockdown. The training he provided has helped us to look out for any signs of mental health conditions in each other and our clients so that we can start a conversation and support someone struggling with a mental health condition. The training provided was relaxed and friendly, with a great mixture of group activity and discussions, along with easy to follow information which Craig broke down and discussed as we went along. He offered a safe atmosphere where if there were any questions or input, we felt comfortable to contribute and he was able to answer any questions we had. Personally it’s also helped how to start a conversation with both clients and staff who are possibly struggling mentally and given me the confidence and tools to carry on a conversation that otherwise I wouldn’t know how to handle to the best of my ability. Craig’s delivery of the course was excellent, he was so relaxed and informative and you could tell he was passionate about what he was teaching us. I did Awareness in First Aid for Mental Health with Craig. I was a bit nervous to start but Craig’s pleasant manner put me at ease straight away. In July I attended an online course taken by Craig Houston. It was an SCQF Level 4 Awareness in First Aid for Mental Health. I wasn't sure what to expect or what I would take back to the salon from doing this course. After being back at work for some time now after lockdown I'm so surprised as to how much I am speaking to my clients confidently about worries/issues they have experienced or are currently experiencing due to uncertain times. I really have benefited so much from this course as I feel confident when speaking to my clients if they confide in me. Craig was fantastic at guiding us through this course and I felt I could ask questions along the way. Craig was extremely informative on all aspects of the course. I came away with more than I ever thought I would and would be interested in doing more courses in the future.

A different day at pre-season today @Bearinmind1988 facilitated a Mental Health First Aid course for the squad at East Shore Park. Well received by the squad Bear’s style was spot on for a football environment.
I had been keen to learn a little more around mental health and how I can assist people and offer further support both in a work environment and also day to day life. The Mental Health First Aid was perfect for this and Craig was the ideal coach and mentor. The course was insightful, well structured and has left me feeling more assured. I can’t recommend highly enough using Bear In Mind.
We set up as a support group for men in early 2020 and quickly found during lockdown there was a huge need in the Inverclyde area to support people with their mental health. We formed as a suicide prevention peer support service and recruited lived experience volunteers. We were on the hunt for training and came across Craig. We communicated with him and he advised us of the courses that could suit our guys. He came to our area and delivered Awareness of Mental Health First Aid and the volunteers loved it. The feedback was that they enjoyed his presenting style and the info was easy to understand. Personally, I was very impressed with Craig and the delivery of a tough subject. We will be ensuring to use the services of Bear In Mind for future training opportunities.
